Minimally invasive treatment of low rectal cancer: stenting as a bridge to surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Stenting as a bridge to surgery (SBTS) is a relatively novel procedure, potentially useful to treat symptomatic left-sided malignant colonic obstruction. The clinical use of SBTS has been mainly suggested in advanced or non resectable tumors, in order to avoid the need for emergency surgery, thus obtaining a good palliation and, at the same time, delaying the elective major procedure. SBTS might also increase the rate of laparoscopic procedures, perhaps reducing the need of staged operations with stoma formation and possibly improving the quality life of patients. Aim of this review article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the clinical use of self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS), specially in left-sided malignant colonic obstructions as a bridge to elective surgery.

Analysis of the Results of Pulmonary Resection by Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopy for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer
Introduction: Lung cancer is the disease of modern era, and the rate of lung cancer mortality is three times as high as that for prostate cancer and twice as high as the rate for breast cancer. We aimed to analyze the results of pulmonary resection in patients with NSCLC by minimally invasive thoracoscopy. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 patients with NSCLC scheduled for surgical resectio...
متن کاملPrime Incision and Modified Moving Window: A Minimally Invasive Access for Breast Cancer Surgical Treatment
BACKGROUND Conservative surgical treatment has been the treatment of choice for early breast cancer. It allows feasible oncological treatment with a satisfactory cosmetic approach and fast recovery. However, in some cases mastectomy is necessary. This study proposes a surgical approach with only one surgical access through the same incision, which is in line with precepts mentioned abov...
متن کاملHyperglycemia and antibody titres against heat shock protein 27 in traumatic brain injury patients on parenteral nutrition
Objective(s):Hyperglycemia worsens the neuronal death induced by cerebral ischemia. Previous studies demonstrated that diabetic hyperglycemia suppressed the expression of heat shock protein 70 and 60 (HSP70 and 60) in the liver. IgG antibody titres against heat shock protein 27 (anti HSP27) were measured to determine whether hyperglycemia exacerbates ischemic brain damage by suppressing the exp...
متن کاملRamadan fasting: Do we need more evidence?
Over a billion of Muslims fast worldwide during Ramadan each year. Through this religious custom, fasting contributes to their health as well as their spiritual growth. However, available evidence regarding the health-benefits of Ramadan fasting is scarce and highly contentious. Although Islam exempts patients from fasting, many fast conceivably, and their clinical condition is prone to deterio...
متن کاملRobotic Rectal Cancer Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery has influenced the approach used in a variety of operations. Laparoscopic surgery is an accepted modality for the treatment of colon cancer, resulting in superior short term functional outcome and equivalent survival when compared with open surgery (Veldkamp et al., 2004; Nelson et al., 2004). However, minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery is still a matter of grea...
